Introducing gion: The Fastest Git Client for Agents
gion is a new open source git client from Baz, built for agents and CI. It fetches only the files, trees and commits a task needs, so agents can read, search, commit and push on huge repositories without a full clone.
Today we're releasing gion (pronounced GI-un, git + scion), an open source git client built for agents.
Git assumes every client keeps a full copy of the repository and may work offline. Agents and CI jobs are the opposite: they are always online, usually read a few files, search a bit and push one change, and often run many at once on one machine. For them, a full clone is mostly waste. gion fetches files, trees and commits from the remote only when a task asks for them.
On chromium, gion greps the whole repository 58x faster than git, checks out a folder 7.1x faster and reads a single file 6x faster. See the full benchmarks.
What you get
- Fast starts: no clone step. Read, search, diff and log any repository right away.
- Small footprint: a workspace holds only the paths you ask for. History stays on the server, so many agents can share one machine.
- Full write path: commit, push to branches and rebase with conflict resolution. Only new objects are sent.
- Works with your server today: gion speaks the standard git wire protocol, so GitHub and other git servers need no setup.
Try it
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/baz-scm/gion/main/install.sh | sh
gion cat chromium/chromium abc2bc3fe6dd:README.mdgion borrows your gh login, GITHUB_TOKEN or git credential helper, and public repositories need none. To have your coding agent use gion instead of git clone, run gion skill install (agents guide). In GitHub Actions, use baz-scm/gion-action/checkout@v1 for a sparse checkout (CI guide).
gion is in beta and licensed under Apache 2.0. Read the docs, star the repository, and tell us what your agents need next.
